Christmas is celebrated every year in all our congregations, but it was a joy this year to celebrate together, with a joint event for the up-country congregations and mission stations, with a Service of Lessons and Carols, followed by a Christmas Programme, which took place on 16 December in Nuwara Eliya.
This year a special choir was formed to lead the congregation in singing during the service of Lessons and Carols. In November, guest musicians from the USA Molly and Emily came to teach the Advent and Christmas songs to the choir, with the help of Mrs. Monica Naumann and Mrs. Amy James who accompanied them. Many of the traditional songs are new to the people, who are learning them for the first time. You can see some videos of the singing here:
The choir looked just as beautiful as they sounded. The men wore matching shirts and the women all wore matching saris. All the people were very happy to hear the beautiful singing and accompaniment with musical instruments. Many Hindu children and parents were also present, to hear the Gospel message in the readings and the sermon from Rev. Arulchelvan.
The service was followed by the Christmas Programme. Many beautiful dances were performed by those who prepared them especially, and the children were happy to receive some gifts at the end for school supplies.
